Back Off! (TooClose) - Privacy Policy

Overview

Back Off! ("we", "the app", formerly known as TooClose) is an eye protection application that monitors the distance between your face and the screen. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

Data Collection

Back Off! does NOT collect, store, or transmit any personal data.

• Camera Data: The app uses the front-facing camera solely to detect faces, iris landmarks, and estimate distance. All image processing is performed entirely on-device using Google ML Kit and Google MediaPipe. Camera frames are processed in real-time and immediately discarded. No images or video are ever saved, stored, or transmitted.
• Iris Detection: The app may use iris landmark detection (via MediaPipe FaceLandmarker) for more accurate distance estimation. Iris data is processed on-device only and is not stored or transmitted. No biometric identification is performed — iris data is used solely for distance measurement.
• Settings: Your app preferences (distance threshold, detection interval, etc.) are stored locally on your device using Android DataStore. This data never leaves your device.
• In-App Purchases: Purchase transactions (ad removal, developer tips) are processed entirely through Google Play. We do not collect or store any payment information.
• No Analytics: We do not use any analytics or tracking services.
• No Cloud Services: The app works entirely offline. No internet connection is required for core functionality.

Permissions

The app requests the following permissions:

• Camera: Required to detect faces/iris and measure distance. Used only while the monitoring service is active.
• Display over other apps (Overlay): Required to show warning banners and screen blocking overlays on top of other apps.
• Foreground Service: Required to run face/iris detection in the background while you use other apps.
• Notifications: Required to show the persistent notification indicating the service is running.
• Boot Completed: Optional. Used to automatically restart monitoring after device reboot, if enabled in settings.
• Billing: Required for in-app purchases (ad removal, developer tips).

Third-Party Services

• Google ML Kit (Face Detection): Used for on-device face detection in Standard mode. No data is sent to Google. See ML Kit Terms.
• Google MediaPipe (Face Landmarker): Used for on-device iris landmark detection in Advanced (Iris) mode. All processing is local — no data is sent to Google. See MediaPipe Documentation.
• Google AdMob: The app displays advertisements through Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data for ad personalization. Ads can be permanently removed via in-app purchase. See Google Privacy Policy. You can opt out of personalized ads in your device settings.
• Google Play Billing: Used for processing in-app purchases. Purchase history is managed by Google Play. See Google Privacy Policy.

In-App Purchases

The app offers the following optional in-app purchases:

• Remove Ads: One-time purchase to permanently remove all advertisements.
• Developer Tips: Optional one-time tips to support the developer (Coffee, Pizza, Gift). These are voluntary and do not unlock any features.

All purchases are processed through Google Play. We do not collect, store, or have access to your payment information.

Supported Languages

The app is available in 18 languages: English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, German, Arabic, Russian, Indonesian, Turkish, Italian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Polish.

Children\'s Privacy

Back Off! includes a "Kids Eye Protection" mode designed for children. The app does not knowingly collect any personal information from children. All processing occurs on-device with no data transmission. The app targets users aged 13 and above.

Data Security

Since no personal data is collected or transmitted, there is no risk of data breach from our app. All settings are stored locally using Android's encrypted DataStore.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy within the app or on this page.
